The most beautiful swimming lakes in Drenthe – cool off naturally near Schoonloo

Drenthe is pre-eminently a province for nature lovers. But did you know that you can also enjoy swimming in nature here? Around Schoonloo you will find several beautiful swimming lakes surrounded by greenery – perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot summer day. In this article we share the most beautiful spots, practical info and some great tips.

1. Loomeer – swimming in the middle of the forest

Just minutes from Bungalowpark Boerhaarsveld is Loomeer – a swimming lake with a sandy beach, gently sloping bottom and shaded areas. There is a toilet block and catering in the high season.

  • 📍 Distance from park: approx. 1.5 km (5 min by bike)
  • 🅿️ Free parking or just walking/biking access
  • ✅ Very suitable for children
  • 🐕 Dogs not allowed in swimming season (May 1 – October 1)

2. Ieberen Lake – quiet and natural

The Ieberenplas is a little further away, toward Grolloo, and is slightly smaller than Loomeer – but at least as attractive. It is often quieter, and the shallow end is ideal for small children.

  • 📍 Location: near Grolloo (approx. 10 min drive)
  • ✅ Picnic tables and beach available
  • 🐕 Dogs prohibited during swimming season
  • 🍂 Also beautiful in spring and fall for a stroll

3. Gasselterveld – bright blue and photogenic

The Gasselterveld is a former sand mining area with turquoise water and a “foreign” character. Next to the lake is the family-friendly Nije Hemelriek, where you can swim, sunbathe and play well with children.

  • 📍 Location: between Gasselte and Drouwen (approx. 15 min drive)
  • 💡 Clear water, beautiful for photos
  • 🍦 In summer often a kiosk open
  • 🅿️ Paid parking in high season

4. ‘t Nije Hemelriek – beach feeling in Drenthe

Adjacent to the Gasselterveld is ‘t Nije Hemelriek – a real family spot with wide sandy beach, shallow water, playground and eateries nearby.

  • ✅ Great for families
  • 🎠 Play equipment and lots of space
  • 🍔 Snack bar and picnic areas available
  • 🕶️ It does get a little busier in the summer – arriving early pays off!

5. Ellertshaar – quiet forest lake where dogs are also welcome

Ellertshaar ‘s forest lake is a nice, quiet spot for those who like to stay away from the busier swimming lakes. The water is surrounded by forest, with a small sandy beach and plenty of space to picnic or just relax. Big advantage: dogs are allowed here, even in the summer – something not allowed at many other lakes.

  • 📍 Location: Ellertshaar (approx. 15 min drive)
  • 🐕 Dogs welcome
  • 🌲 Lots of shade and nature
  • ✅ Suitable for those seeking peace and quiet or swimming with the dog

💡 Tips for a great day of swimming in nature:

  • Bring a cooler and picnic blanket – catering facilities are not available everywhere
  • Respect nature: no littering, no loud music
  • Check official swimming locations on bathingwater.com for current water quality
  • Don’t forget: sunscreen, hat and lots of drinks!
