Autumn in Drenthe: 5 colorful hiking trails for true nature lovers

Autumn gives Drenthe extra sparkle: golden forests, quiet moors, mushrooms and fresh air. From Bungalowpark Boerhaarsveld you can reach these five beautiful walks in a short time – ideal for a relaxing autumn vacation.

1. Pieterpad: Schoonloo → Sleen (approx. 18-24 km, red-and-white marked)

Start: Hoofdstraat 16, 9443 PA Schoonloo
End: Brink, Sleen (public transport stop available)
Starting in Schoonloo, you will walk through the woods and dirt paths of the Sleenerzand, past ash fields, wooded banks and later the brink village of Sleen. Along the way, forest, heath and open fields alternate – perfect for autumn colors and photos. You can shorten the stage by boarding the bus in (North) Sleen.

2. Sleenerzand: Juniper route & around Kibbelkoele (4-8 km, pole routes)

Start/parking: P-place De Kibbelkoele, Noord-Sleen
In autumn you will see many mushrooms, juniper bushes and yellow-red leaf tunnels here. At the spot, choose the shorter or longer loop (pole routes). The little beach at the Kibbelkoele is a nice place for a break with thermos. With children, this is an accessible, varied route.

3. Orvelte: Boswachterspad Oer ‘t Veld or “Weg van Orvelte” (5-12 km, red pictogram/variants)

Start/Parking: Orvelte Visitor Center (Brink/De Bruntingerhof)
You walk through the historic esdorpen landscape: cart tracks, wooded banks and the Orvelter sand. In the village of Orvelte, the autumn atmosphere is extra special: cobblestone streets, old farms and local stores. Choose the Boswachterspad Oer ‘t Veld (with GPX download) or the atmospheric Weg van Orvelte (various lengths).

4. Forestry Gees: quiet autumn loop (12-17 km, loop)

Start/parking: P-place Geeserbosweg (small), or alternatively at Gees
This is one of the quietest hiking areas in the region. You walk through pine forest, along fens and the stream valley of the Geeserstroom. In the early morning you have a chance of seeing roe deer. Choose a loop of about 12.5 km (with GPX download) or the longer “Way of Gees” (about 17 km).

5. Strubben-Kniphorstbosch: prehistory & autumn light (5-9 km, marked)

Start/parking: P-place Anloo (Drentsche Aa, near information panel)
You walk through a unique archaeological reserve with two dolmens, burial mounds and characteristic oak avenues. In autumn the low light provides beautiful vistas. The route is well marked and can be shortened as desired (±5 km) or walked as a 9 km loop.

Practical & cozy

Dogs are welcome in many areas (usually on a leash; check local signs). In autumn, bring a thermos and wear waterproof shoes. Before or after the walk, the village of Orvelte is atmospheric for coffee and something tasty; you’ll also find cafes and bakeries in (North) Sleen and Borger.
